Fresh off the official unveiling of our new website, we have been graced with an exclusive guest mix full of unreleased goodies by our good friend NoSa! In case you’re unfamiliar, NoSa is currently at the forefront of where bass music is undoubtedly heading. With melodies that are sure to leave you in a trance, NoSa manages to take you on a bass driven journey that is near dreamlike. Each track seems to achieve the perfect blend of heavy hitting bass, amongst subtle underlying tones, and progressions that keep you right on the edge of uncertainty as to what might come next. In such a short amount of time, his ability to create these organic sounds that build off of one another so seamlessly is inspiring to say the least, and with productions as unique as his, the sky is merely the limit. Be sure to stay locked, as there is sure to be much more to come from NoSa in the near future. Without further ado, check out this interview with the man himself.
Nick: How long have you been producing under NoSa?
NoSa: I started producing as NoSa just under a year ago. I was working on a really fat tune called “Don’t Stop” with a producer who was also very new at the time and he had a name and I didn’t. He told me I had to pick a name so we could release this!
Nick: Do you have any collaborations you are currently working on that we should know about?
NoSa: Yes. I have a few collaborations with Brainrack that have been developing for a while as well as some other producers around Philly that I’ve started working with. I also have one collab with two other producers, which was definitely a new approach to creating a beat. One of those producers has actually released music with MCR. I’ll leave it to mystery who it is until we drop the song…
Nick: What do you feel distinguishes you from other young producers right now?
NoSa: That’s such a crazy question because bass music has gone in so many different directions in just the past few years. Recently, I’ve been getting excited about making heavy and gritty bass and rhythm driven songs while still trying to consider how I can incorporate melodies. I also have been focused on bringing subtlety to the feel of my songs.
Nick: Can you talk a little bit about the local scene in Philly and how it has influenced you and your music?
NoSa: The scene in Philly is super diverse. There is plenty of punk/alt rock shows, hip hop shows, jam band music, and electronic to see. You can even catch some great jazz if you want. Personally, I’ve been influenced by the experimental trap beats and wubby, almost hypnotic Dubstep beats that you can find in the most precarious DIY venues in Philly. There’s also a ton of really cool visuals artists in Philly ranging from VJ’s all the way to painters that inspire the community as a whole.
Nick: Who would you say is your favorite producer at the moment?
NoSa: Definitely Yheti. I have been fucking with his sound so hard since I saw him for the first time at Farm Fest this summer.
Nick: Do you have any upcoming performances scheduled that you are particularly excited for?
NoSa: I’m actually doing a show this Saturday. I booked the lineup, which is packed with a bunch of cool talent that I’ve met while at Temple U. Later on this fall I have a couple more shows in the works. Also, look out for maybe a live stream or two.
Nick: Your music seems to have progressed fairly quickly in just the past year. How do you feel about the current state of your music and where you think it’s heading?
NoSa: I’ve been working on beat production for about three years and I always knew what kind of music I wanted to make. In the past year or so is when I felt that I had really developed my ideas enough to start putting stuff out. As for as the future goes, I plan to take it as far as I can both in the studio and in my live sets.
Nick: Can you talk about the EP you’re releasing with us later this fall?
NoSa: So it’s called “Energy” and is going to feature 4 brand new tracks some that I’ve been sitting on for the longest time. A couple of these tracks go as far back as 2014 and then there’s others that I made just this spring but it feels really good to get them out there. They’ve definitely grown on me quite a bit. I wanted to make this EP thematic in the sense that the songs kind of play off of each other. I think as you listen to it front to back you’ll notice how they all sort of share a general vibe that develops in a slightly different way in each track. Almost as if each song is a word than the EP as a whole is a sentence.
